Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Terms and Concepts:

The Jewish educational system around the time of Jesus

  • Bet sefer – House of the book – essentially elementary school – Memorize the Torah be age 12 or 13
  • Bet Midrash – house of learning – continue studies by age 17 – memorize entire OT

  2. Become like your rabbi
  3. Do what your rabbi does

    1. Learn from me – verb form of disciple – manthanō
    2. Take my Yoke – the yoke is the teachings (requirements) surrounding how to live life
  3. The burden gives rest – not rest from trials and trouble, but rest in them

  2. Apprentice yourself to Jesus
    1. Be with Jesus
    2. Be like Jesus
    3. Do what Jesus did
